Kriya yoga

A kundalini oriented yoga and a meditation technique, kriya yoga also teaches certain spiritual and esoteric principles. It is more popular among those people who wish to go for a deeper, more spiritual relationship with their lives. Kriya yoga emphasizes on the need of a guru i.e. a master and unlike other such disciplines it follows the principle that your power lies outside yourself.

The aim with which Kriya yoga is practiced is very appealing and promising. It focuses on removing the obstructions and obstacles from the mind and the body of the individual practicing it. It is further more interesting because the obstructions and obstacles are not the same globally. While something might be an obstacle or obstruction for one may not be the same for the other. The whole process explains the importance of maintaining your own sovereignty in mind and action.

The credit of bringing Kriya yoga to the west goes to Yoganand. He initiated in 1920’s by giving importance to self realization by addressing both the spiritual as well as physical aspects.

The six main kriyas called the shat karma include – Kapalbhati i.e. cleansing of brain and lungs, Trataka – cleansing and controlling eyes, Cleansing of intestinal and abdominal parts is called Nauli, Washing of nostrils with water is called Neti. Washing the stomach with water is Dhauti and the last is the cleaning of the rectum and colon called Basti, some also call it vasti.

Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga and Jnana yoga are the three streams of yoga from which the techniques of Kriya yoga have been derived. Movement of the soul inside and outside the mind is the aspect focused on by Karma yoga. Bhakti yoga concentrates on bringing people together by spreading love and coming to terms with the people around. The Jnana yoga talks about the freedom of mind. The objective of self realization can be achieved most quickly thru Kriya yoga when compared to any other method of doing the same.

The basic purpose behind combining the body and the soul is purification. Kriya yoga begins with preparing the body, which is done in more than one ways. Some find Hatha yoga as one of the best ways as a preparatory exercises although it may not be a good option for those who find themselves less flexible. There are other alternatives available for them.

Then, comes the preparation of mind. It is very essential for the mind to be focused correctly. By doing all this techniques used in Kriya yoga ensure over all wellness, purity and cleanliness of mind and body and to quite an extent it includes the principles of metaphysics. The later part along with the former in a sense refines the brain and the nervous system.

To experience the depth of meditation the Kriya yoga techniques also teach the mantras. Here the tuning of the body is done using the sound technology. It might not sound convincing to the beginners but the sound technology actually works. But the direction in which it tunes the body depends on the type of music we play.
